Journal Entry: Sun Jul 16, 2006, 4:51 AM
With the recent removal the Comment Deletion tool, it is no longer possible to delete any deviation comment, no matter how obscene, illegal, or harassing. The tool has even been removed for admins so, while complaining about a problem comment might get the commentator banned, the comment itself will stay.

I had someone post a clearly harassing comment on one of my deviations and include a large obscene ASCii drawing. Since the Help Desk insisted that there was nothing they could do about it, I waited for a week for the tool to come back.

Then I remembered that the Search Tool has been "in progress" for about a year with no change at all. (If you use the Search tool, it won't find any deviations posted since the day the Search tool was introduced.) So it seems like that the Comment Deletion tool may be a long time coming.

In the meantime, although the dA TOS forbids obscene, harassing, or illegal comments, that policy is no longer enforceable. I wonder if this is why the Weekly Development post says that there is a dramatic increase in Harassment reports.

I wound up simply deleting the deviation that has an obscene comment, sadly losing all comments and favs that went with it. Today, I realized that I can simply shut down the comments throughout my gallery for the same effect but it also prevents any new legitimate comments from being posted. This also means that existing comments are currently hidden but, thankfully, can be restored when it is safe to allow comments again.

That's sad, but it's been happening for a while with some artists. A friend of mine had to repost a deviation where he was harrassed.

a few interesting points:

-if you disable commenting on a dev, all comments on that dev dissapear :)
-the comment removal option has been gone for a while, however try switching to beta testing, as chances are they are going to be among the first to get use of it
-I've had the same problem, but with less intelligence(someone would post the same line as much as they could by copying and pasting, which explains why my old devs have no comments)
-the search tool works now, though sometimes you have to do the same search for it to work.
-the main reason there is an increase in reports is because there are spammers who will copy and paste a single line of spam, and each one of those incidents gets reported which leads to the higher number of reports
-chances are the person that left it has already been banned
-don't be discouraged, just make a separate account and offer no links to it from your main account.

Hmm.. that's really lame. I'm sorry to hear about people harrassing you. Some people just have nothing better to do I suppose..? So do you think you're going to resort to disabling the comments to prevent this? ~_~

Dov, I'm sorry someone was a terrible jerk like that.

You have my continued and eager support, as a fan.

The annoying thing is that I wasn't even the person they were trying to harass. They were making fake accounts and posting offensive comments on random deviations to try to incriminate someone else.

For now, I've disabled comments on all deviations. Unfortunately, I can't see a way disable journal comments so the journal is still vulnerable.

The person who left the offensive comments was banned yet, but they had been banned before. They were creating fake accounts and spoofing their IP number so that they couldn't be permanently blocked. It was part of a harassment campaign against a specific person.

The comments do disappear, yeah. Maybe I'll just keep all the comments enabled until someone posted something offensive and then just disable comments on just that deviation.

I still feel like I'm not getting the service I paid for though. I understand that it's important for the tools to work well without causing server problems but I also think this tool is too critical for the slow treatment development of the Search tool has gotten and I don't know if it will get the same treatment.

Whaaa?? That's completely weird. My best friend just went through a big ordeal over some jerk doing that to her and nearly everyone on her friends list. *shakes head* But at least not everyone on this site is like that. There are some great people here too! ^^
